Summer Frequencies

Welcome to Summer Frequencies! A new, FREE ENTRY, monthly series from the teams at Beavertown and Omeara, showcasing an absolutely first rate, finger-on-the-pulse selection of rock, punk and indie talent from around the UK, the sounds of tomorrow, the people of now. A chance to sweat out your woes, explore cutting-edge sounds and make new friends, all fuelled by downright excellent drinks from Beavertown.
Starting on 6th June, our first edition features live sets in Omeara’s arch from English Teacher, Pynch and Half Happy, plus Guilty Pleasures’ Graham Newlands will be spinning indie-classics till the early hours in the bar! Arrive early, stay late. Let’s get together to listen, laugh, drink and dance.

ENGLISH TEACHER

Having first met whilst studying in Leeds and remained in the city harnessing their craft and recording demos ever since, the four-piece, marshalled by enigmatic frontwoman Lily Fontaine (also part of Yorkshire risers Eades), have sought inspiration from social issues, literature and wit for their brand new material, whilst also benefiting from previously working alongside legendary producer/engineer Ken Scott (The Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John).

Pynch

Pynch are a true 21st century DIY band that have built up a dedicated global fanbase from a handful of self-released singles through a combination of tenacity, wistful lo-fi and life affirming lyricism. On their debut album, Howling at a Concrete Moon, they have followed through on their vision and delivered ten stunning tracks that offer a snapshot of what it is to be young and adrift at this strange junction of history.

Sonically, Pynch serve up a heady concoction of motoric beats (Julianna Hopkins), driving basslines (Scott Enock), soaring guitars (Spencer Enock) and melancholic synths (James Rees) to create a sound that is steeped in indie and electronic history yet still vitally present. In his lyrics, Spencer combines a yearning for meaning with dry observations about pop-culture, conspiracies and McDonalds; juxtaposing the celestial with the everyday, to the tune of a slacker Gameboy rhapsody.

Half Happy

Half Happy emerged in Lockdown and when everyone could go back to the pub they went straight to the studio with friend and Producer Tom Rees (of Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard) to record their first few tracks. Their new single ‘Runaway Girl’ is a softer tale which drowns you in oooh’s, pensive guitars and bubbling bass which take you on the guilt train and back. They’ve all known each other for 9 years from Uni, Zac and Jon go back further to bad haircuts in high school. Half Happy are tied together in a cosy Cardiff Radius where everybody knows your name (almost). Airy, dreamy guitar licks lift you up so that bittersweet lyrics can lure you in and poke you in the gut. Their collective love for post-punk will soon fight to shine through but for the moment, they’re Half Happy.
